SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK

FALL 2018

ALBUM COVER DESIGN

SINGLE ALBUM COVER INSPIRED BY SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK, JOJI.

TASKS

For this project we were given a week to create an album cover for our favorite song. The goal was to focus on audience, meaning, and typographic exploration.

User Problem

SLOW DANCING IN THE DARK is about the inability to fully love or be loved due to one's mental health and/or stability. Due to the melody, the songs at first sounds like a love song that couples listen to together. However, the lyrics and meaning represent something a lot more dark.

How can we turn this song's meaning into a visual design?

SKETCHES

When doing sketches I listened to the song repeatedly until I reached twenty-five conceptual sketches. I knew I wanted to take one illustrative direction and another playing with photography. I wanted my cover to have dark tones to it along with symbols/illustrations that showed a sign of hope and a type of innocence.

Final Product

After feedback from classmates I chose two sketches to make into my final cover. For my first illustrative cover, I created an illustrative design that evoked a loving feeling, but translated into something deeper. I chose to have the trees represent the anxiety and stress that blocks one from the idea of being fully happy with someone. My second cover is a representation of what love can do to you when you're feeling numb on the inside. The red flowers in the dead plant represent hope for one who feels like they're stuck in the walls of depression and anxiety.
